Leicester Drama Society made a successful bid to the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund to support the venue’s re-opening, being awarded £154,865 in mid-October 2020. LDS Trustees Chair Andy Crooks said: “The awarding of the grant is fabulous news as it enables us to plan and deliver a broader programme to a wider audience much earlier than was otherwise possible. It meets the costs of making the theatre COVID-secure, which are substantial.”

The theatre will, as far as is practical, be COVID-secure, with audience members seated in social ‘bubbles’ and wearing face coverings, except when in the bar or eating. All visitors will be temperature-checked, and the use of hand sanitisers placed throughout the building encouraged. Patrons can check in using the NHS COVID-19 app. Between shows, the auditorium and all public areas will be disinfected with a fogger.

As part of the safety measures, the theatre is going cashless, with all payments now being taken by contactless card. There will be an ‘at seat’ ice cream service in the interval, and the bar will be table service, in line with current regulations. The Moira Haywood Studio will form an additional bar seating area to allow patrons to socially distance. In addition, there will be a one-way system in operation in the theatre, with plenty of signage and volunteers on hand to assist.
