WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW MORE THAN EVER BEFORE…

The Little Theatre is a registered charity (no. 214249) run entirely by the Leicester Drama Society Ltd. The Society is largely self-supporting, with income derived from ticket sales, the sale of refreshments and donations. The theatre receives no subsidies from any outside bodies for the day-to day-running of the theatre.

In 2020, COVID-19 forced the closure of The Little Theatre for the first time in its history. During this period, the theatre’s income effectively ceased, resulting in the society effectively closing down. Our membership rallied to the cause and, through various fundraising initiatives, managed to raise enough money to keep The Little Theatre as a facility ticking over while ‘dark’. We have also been heartened by the number of people who have made donations large and small to the theatre from outside the Leicester Drama Society; their generosity has been a chink of light at an otherwise gloomy moment in the theatre’s history.

If you would like to support the theatre, we of course welcome your donation! Donations contribute towards helping us over this unprecedented crisis – every contribution will benefit our audience and volunteers for many years to come.

Making a donation couldn’t be simpler… visit our NowDonate page, where you can make a one-off donation any amount, or a regular monthly donation.

We thank you for your support!

LEAVE A LEGACY

If you have cherished memories of the shows that you have watched at the Little Theatre and believe our work should continue for future generations to enjoy, please consider leaving a gift in your will to the Leicester Drama Society. Any gift, large or small, will make a difference to us in supporting our work on stage and beyond.

Any generous donations that we receive go into our dedicated Legacy Fund which is administered by the Society’s Trustees. They may use your donation wherever it is needed most.

However, you may wish your legacy to be spent supporting something specific, for example, our Youth Theatre or our annual Pantomime.

You may choose to leave a fixed amount or a share of your estate.

As we are a registered charity (No.214249), no inheritance tax is payable on the amount of your gift, and if you generously leave 10% of your estate to the Society any remaining inheritance tax bill may be reduced.

For more information about remembering the Little Theatre in your will please contact our Theatre Manager, Phil Royley on Leicester (0116) 2542266 or proyley@lds-mail.net

We asked Peter Wood from our corporate supporter InHouse Wills to answer some FAQs below and you can also refer to gov.uk for further information.

What information do I need when I include a gift to the Leicester Drama Society in my will?
The key information needed is the name, address and registered charity number: Leicester Drama Society of The Little Theatre, Dover Street, Leicester, LE1 6PW.

Can I change my existing will?
An accredited will writer or a specialist solicitor can help you to create an additional document called a codicil to your existing will, but often it is a good opportunity to review your will completely. Either way don’t be tempted to make changes yourself as it could render a will invalid if this isn’t done correctly.

I don’t have a will, how do I get one?
A will deals with everything that you own, so it’s important to not just have one but to have the best one for your circumstances. That’s why we recommend taking advice from an experienced will writer or a solicitor with expertise in wills and probate. The Institute of Professional Willwriters have a search tool that can help you find a local practitioner who offers a home visit service for this.

What types of gift in wills are there?
Typically people include either a cash gift for an exact amount (pecuniary legacy) or a share of what is left after all expenses and legacies have been paid (gift of residue). Other options are available such as the gift of a particular asset and an experienced advisor can help you to think through what is most appropriate for your wishes.

How does this affect inheritance tax?
If your estate is large enough to be liable for inheritance tax then rest assured any gift to the Leicester Drama Society will be tax free. This will reduce, or even eliminate, your estate’s tax bill. What’s more, if your charity gifts total 10% or more of your estate then any remaining inheritance tax is calculated at a rate of 36% rather than 40%, reducing the tax bill by a further 10%. Tax is complex, so do seek proper advice if it is of concern to you.

Can I restrict my gift in my will to a specific activity?
Hopefully it will be many years before your will takes effect, by which time the particular financial needs of the Society are likely to have changed. That’s why we recommend that you mention any specific use of your gift as a wish rather than as a fixed restriction. Of course if there is a current activity that you particularly want to help you are very welcome to make an immediate donation towards it, if your circumstances allow.
